The Association of American Publishers’ monthly and annual statistics reports are the definitive resource for up-to-date information on the U.S. publishing industry. The reports provide a comprehensive statistical analysis of how publishing products are produced and sold to consumers. You can purchase individual reports or statistics report subscriptions through the online store.

Affiliate Partnership

Affiliate Partnerships are available to non-publishers, including sole practitioners, consultants, firms, nonprofits, and other companies that work closely with the publishing industry. Affiliate Partners do not qualify for membership but want to support AAP’s mission and are interested in the AAP’s benefits, industry news, and reports. StatShot Annual provides an authoritative view of the health of the U.S. publishing industry by estimating the total revenue, unit sales and average net unit price (ANUP) for the U.S. publishing industry. The report covers Trade (consumer books), Higher Education, PreK-12, Professional, and University Press markets, and breaks out estimated revenue by both format (hardback, paperback, mass market, physical audio, downloaded audio, and eBook) and channel (physical retail, online retail, intermediary, direct, and export). StatShot Annual employs a methodology that combines annual data submitted by publishers and distributors with market modeling. Report can be downloaded as a PDF after purchase.
StatShot Monthly reports participating publishers’ aggregated gross sales, returns, net sales, and growth rate for each month of the year, as well for calendar year-to-date. The report includes comparisons to the same month of prior year, as well as year-to-date comparisons by category and format. The report covers the full range of categories, including Adult Books, Children & Young Adult Books, Religious Presses, Professional Books, K-12 Instructional Materials, Higher Educational Course Materials, University Presses and All Other. It also breaks out information by format, including Hardback, Board Book, Paperback, Mass Market, Physical Audio, Downloaded Audio, eBook, and Other. Report can be downloaded as a PDF after purchase.
The PreK-12 Books and Materials Annual Report provides five years of aggregated revenue for participating PreK-12 publishers. The report breaks out information by product category, subject, and territory in both adoption and non-adoption states for grade segments Prek-6 and 6-12. The report also includes Advanced Placement revenue which covers three years in gross, returns, and net categories. Product categories include basal product, supplemental/intervention, assessment products, and services, and includes data for 13 subjects, front lists, back lists, adoption states, open territories, and select school districts. PreK-12 Books and Materials Monthly reports participating publishers’ aggregated net sales for each month and on a year-to-date basis, and provides comparisons to the same month of previous year, as well as year-to-date comparisons. The report covers core curriculum (basal) materials broken out by grade (preK-6, 6-12, and total preK-12), subjects, adoption states, and open territory states. Report can be downloaded as a PDF after purchase.
Higher Education Books and Materials Annual provides three years of aggregated revenue on college products from participating publishers. Aggregated revenue is reported for these categories: format (print/digital/bundles), market category (college, high school, retail, and other), over 30 subjects, as well as frontlist/backlist. Report can be downloaded as a PDF after purchase.
AAP statistics report subscriptions cover all reports issued within the 2021 calendar year and are delivered by email distribution list. Reports cannot be downloaded.
Non-publishing companies and organizations that work in or around the publishing industry are eligible for the AAP Affiliate Partners Program.
